5th Easter 2010, Playing Chess

5th Easter John 16, 1-33

“All these words I have spoken to you so that you will not be offended because you discover what destiny falls to you through being connected with me. For they will exclude you from their communities, and the hour will come when those who rob you of your earthly existence and kill you will think they are offering service to the progress of the world. They will do so because they cannot raise their knowing to knowledge of the Father, nor to knowledge of my being and working. All these words I have spoken to you so that when the time comes you will remember that I said them to you. I did not speak to you in this way in the beginning because I was with you. But now I am going away to him who sent me; yet, none of you has yet the strength and courage to ask me about the realm into which I now enter. Your hearts are full of grief and therefore closed to the things I have said to you.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is for your salvation and healing that I go

away, for if I did not go away, the Comforter, who will stand by you in all trials, the Spirit upon whom you can call for assistance at any moment, would not come to you. But because I go, I will be able to send him to you. When he comes, he will bring to the world a consciousness of how the nature of the sickness of sin works, of how people can be reconnected with the divine world in which there is no sin, and of how the decision about human error can be brought about. Sin is human beings not really being able to trust in my being and in that which works out of my being within them. The balancing of sin holds sway in my going to the Father and in not remaining limited to appearing outwardly. Judgment works in the decision that has already been made about the prince of outer world.

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But only when the Spirit comes, through whom the Truth can reveal itself to the world, will he lead you to the Truth that Embraces All. For he will not speak only out of himself, but he will speak what he hears in the realm of the Spirit, as the speaking of the eternal reality, and he will tell you what is yet to come. Thus will he reveal me among men, for out of what he takes from my being he will proclaim to you. In the realm in which my Father works, there I also live. That is why I can say, ‘He will take from my being and proclaim to you’.

In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more’, and then, ‘after a little while you will see me’, and ‘because I am going to the Father’? They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not understand what he is saying.”

Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “You are wondering what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.’  Amen, amen, the truth I say to you, you will weep and deeply mourn, and the world will rejoice in this. You will be filled with sorrow, but this your sorrow will be turned into unceasing joy. A woman giving birth must bear pain, for her difficult hour has come. But when the child is born, she no longer considers the anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

So it is with you. Now is your time of grief. But this your grief will become the power of Spirit-Birth, for I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. On that day, you will be so deeply united with me that you will no longer need to ask me anything.

Amen, amen, I tell you the truth; from now on what you ask of the Father in my name, He will give to you. Until now, you have not been able to ask anything in my name. Ask and you shall receive, and your joy will be complete.

Pray from the heart, and it will be given to your heart so that your joy may be fulfilled.

All this I have given to your souls in imagery. But the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in pictures, but will tell you openly and unveiled about my Father, so that you can grasp it in full, knowing consciousness. So will I proclaim to you the being of the Father. On that day, you will ask out of my power and in my name. And no longer will I ask the Father on your behalf. For the Father himself will love you because you have loved me, and have known in your hearts that I have come forth from the Father. I have come forth from the Father and I have come into this world.

I leave the sense world again and return to the world of the Father, of which you say that it is the world of death.”

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking in clear thought and without imagery. Now we know that all things are revealed to you and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

Jesus answered, “Do you now feel my power in your heart? Behold, the time is coming, and has already come, when you will be scattered, each to his own loneliness. You will then also leave me alone. But I am not alone, for the Father is eternally united with me.

All this I have spoken to you so that in me you may find peace. In this world, you will have great fear and hardship. But take courage. I have overcome the world.”

5th Easter

John 16: 1 – 33

There is a fairy tale that tells how the devil made a great world mirror, in which everything was distorted unrecognizably into its opposite. This mirror shattered into billions of pieces, and specks flew into people’s eyes. It made them see the wrong side of things. If the specks penetrated into their hearts, they turned to ice. [1]

In today’s reading Christ feels compassion for the disciple’s hearts; for his impending crucifixion will activate such the mirror shards and, for a while, things will not appear to them as they truly are. But He also promises that this condition will be temporary. For after a short time, He will send a Healer who will remove the specks, and show them the Truth. Their vision will be healed of its ills. Although each of them will only see from a partial perspective, from a certain angle, they will indeed see truly.

We human beings are all partial. We are on a path of evolution toward greater wholeness, toward alignment with the greater and great levels of Truth. Moments of suffering and moments of enlightenment follow each other in greater spirals. For, in the words of St. John of the Cross,

If
you were playing chess with someone who
had infinite power and infinite knowledge
and wanted to make you a
master of the game,
where would all the chess
pieces be at every
moment?

Indeed, not only where he wanted them,
but where all were best for your
development;
and that is every situation
of one’s
life.[2]

For they will exclude you from their communities, and the hour will come when those who rob you of your earthly existence and kill you will think they are offering service to the progress of the world. They will do so because they cannot raise their knowing to knowledge of the Father, nor to knowledge of my being and working. All these words I have spoken to you so that when the time comes you will remember that I said them to you. I did not speak to you in this way in the beginning because I was with you. But now I am going away to him who sent me; yet, none of you has yet the strength and courage to ask me about the realm into which I now enter. Your hearts are full of grief and therefore closed to the things I have said to you.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is for your salvation and healing that I go away, for if I did not go away, the Comforter, who will stand by you in all trials, the Spirit upon whom you can call for assistance at any moment, would not come to you. But because I go, I will be able to send him to you. When he comes, he will bring to the world a consciousness of how the nature of the sickness of sin works, of how people can be reconnected with the divine world in which there is no sin, and of how the decision about human error can be brought about. Sin is human beings not really being able to trust in my being and in that which works out of my being within them. The balancing of sin holds sway in my going to the Father and in not remaining limited to appearing outwardly. Judgment works in the decision that has already been made about the prince of outer world.

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But only when the Spirit comes, through whom the Truth can reveal itself to the world, will he lead you to the Truth that Embraces All. For he will not speak only out of himself, but he will speak what he hears in the realm of the Spirit, as the speaking of the eternal reality, and he will tell you what is yet to come. Thus will he reveal me among men, for out of what he takes from my being he will proclaim to you. In the realm in which my Father works, there I also live. That is why I can say, ‘He will take from my being and proclaim to you’.

In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more’, and then, ‘after a little while you will see me’, and ‘because I am going to the Father’? They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not understand what he is saying.”

Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “You are wondering what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.’  Amen, amen, the truth I say to you, you will weep and deeply mourn, and the world will rejoice in this. You will be filled with sorrow, but this your sorrow will be turned into unceasing joy. A woman giving birth must bear pain, for her difficult hour has come. But when the child is born, she no longer considers the anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

So it is with you. Now is your time of grief. But this your grief will become the power of Spirit-Birth, for I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. On that day, you will be so deeply united with me that you will no longer need to ask me anything.

There is an Old Testament story in which God wants to lead His people to a new setting. He sent two angels to Abraham’s nephew Lot to gather the people together and lead them out of the doomed city. The angels warned them not to stop or look back during this transition. But Lot’s wife could not resist turning her attention backward. Perhaps she was  fascinated with horror over the city’s destruction. Or perhaps she felt grief over what had to be left behind. But not heeding the angel’s words, to keep her focus on moving forward, cost her dearly. In the biblical imagery, she was transformed into a pillar of salt, her soul trapped in trying to preserve a worn-out past.

This is the time of the year when Christ says to us: ‘But now I am going away to Him who sent me; yet none of you has yet the courage and strength to ask me about the realm into which I now enter. Your hearts are full of grief and therefore closed to the things I have said to you.’

He said this at His last supper with His friends, after He has told them about his own destiny walk. His disciples were in shock and grief—instead of becoming the Israelite king, He was walking toward His death. He has compassion for their sorrow; and yet He wants to convey to them that if He succeeds, something tremendous will be accomplished. And they will be comforted.

Clinging to what is gone closes our hearts to the present, and robs us of our future. Our souls need the courage and strength to investigate the realm into which He, and we, are entering. On the other side of dismay and death lies something higher and deeper. As the poet says:

…if you have endured a great despair,
then you did it alone,
getting a transfusion from the fire,
…Next, my kinsman, you powdered your sorrow,
you gave it a back rub
and then you covered it with a blanket
and after it had slept a while
it woke to the wings of the roses
and was transformed.[1]

John 16:1-33

Spring blossoms are often called ephemerals. Their beauty appears for a short time, bringing joy. But they quickly disappear. They must make way for the nourishing fruits of a later season.

The Easter season is almost over. Christ gives us, his disciples, foreknowledge that the beauty of His resurrection body is about to disappear from view. In less than two weeks He will ascend to his Father. He will still be present on the earth, but in a hidden way. He promises, however, to send His Spirit, the healing Spirit of love and understanding, to reside in human souls. From there, God’s healing Spirit will germinate in souls, setting fruit. These fruits of the Spirit, fruits of love, comfort and understanding, will over time mature and ripen. In time they will become fertile seeds we sow as words and deeds of love in the world.

But meanwhile we disciples must all endure times of uncertainty, of anxiety and grief. Christ assures us that this is a necessary transition, a phase, when the joy and beauty disappear, and the coming phase of joy is not yet. One gateway closes; the other has not yet opened, and we seem stranded in between.

While conditions ripen, our task is to endure; to bear the lonely pain with hope and expectation, until the door of fruitfulness opens.

The poet gives us something of this in-between mood:

…I am very worried and happy
…And there is nowhere I would rather be
alive or dead
than in this world,
….meanwhile
housing perpetual births and disappearances
and [I] am glad (the wind is blowing, it is written, adore
the wind)
and am speechlessly grateful and glad and afraid
I don't mind saying that I am scared
to death of God: I am
afraid and blind and ignorant and naked and
I'll take it!…..
I can't grasp it, but I am so very glad.[1]

4th Easter

John 16:  1 – 33

A seed has power. Its power is not in its size; it is not even outwardly visible. Rather its power is what lives within it – the power of germinating life, of growth, of transformation.

In the readings since Easter there is a theme which arises again and again—the theme of Christ’s power working in human hearts. For since His resurrection, He has planted himself in the depths of our hearts. Even though this Christ-seed is not outwardly visible, nonetheless He is present.

Thomas demanded that he see and touch the Risen One; and his wish was granted. Yet Christ points him further to where Christ himself is truly to be found. To the Thomas in us He says: “‘Have you now found my power in yourself because you have seen me? Blessed are those who find my power in their hearts even when their eye does not yet see me.” John 20:29

He also says of Himself: “I am the Good Shepherd.” John 10: 11 and 14. He guides us even if invisibly. We can trust in his guidance through everything, no matter what difficulties destiny brings us. For it is His seed-power in us that works in our hearts to guide us. It is the power to germinate the new, the power to grow, the power to transform even evil.

In the Sunday Service for the Children we hear, “Christ died. He became alive in the being of those who gave Him a dwelling in their hearts.” Though the Christ-seed is planted, it is up to us to tend it. And now, during the Easter season, we adults hear: Christ is risen to you as the meaning of the earth. Our hearts are to grow the Christ seed to include the whole earth. Even in our inadequacies, He encourages us. The poet Rumi said to the Christ power in him:
My heart is so small

it's almost invisible.
How can You place
such big sorrows in it?

"Look," He answered,
"your eyes are even smaller,
yet they behold the world."[1]


Power is not size; power is what lives within. Christ is risen in us as the meaning of the earth.

Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “You are wondering what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.’  Amen, amen, the truth I say to you, you will weep and deeply mourn, and the world will rejoice in this. You will be filled with sorrow, but this your sorrow will be turned into unceasing joy. A woman giving birth must bear pain, for her difficult hour has come. But when the child is born, she no longer considers the anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

So it is with you. Now is your time of grief. But this your grief will become the power of Spirit-Birth, for I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. On that day, you will be so deeply united with me that you will no longer need to ask me anything.

Amen, amen, I tell you the truth; from now on what you ask of the Father in my name, He will give to you. Until now, you have not been able to ask anything in my name. Ask and you shall receive, and your joy will be complete.

Pray from the heart, and it will be given to your heart so that your joy may be fulfilled.

All this I have given to your souls in imagery. But the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in pictures, but will tell you openly and unveiled about my Father, so that you can grasp it in full, knowing consciousness. So will I proclaim to you the being of the Father. On that day, you will ask out of my power and in my name. And no longer will I ask the Father on your behalf. For the Father himself will love you because you have loved me, and have known in your hearts that I have come forth from the Father. I have come forth from the Father and I have come into this world.

I leave the sense world again and return to the world of the Father, of which you say that it is the world of death.”

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking in clear thought and without imagery. Now we know that all things are revealed to you and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

Jesus answered, “Do you now feel my power in your heart? Behold, the time is coming, and has already come, when you will be scattered, each to his own loneliness. You will then also leave me alone. But I am not alone, for the Father is eternally united with me.

All this I have spoken to you so that in me you may find peace. In this world, you will have great fear and hardship. But take courage. I have overcome the world.”


5th Easter

John 16: 1-33

Hiking in nature, we need to find a path. The path may lead us to a high and windy peak, where we can see everything. We could imagine that spreading our arms to the wind, we could be airborne. But we know better than to try. On the path downward, we may try to take a shortcut down through a ravine; but losing our footing could also cause us to lose our life.

In today’s reading, Christ promises that He will send us the spirit of Truth. The Truth that Embraces All is the firm ground in our walk of life. In the truth, we remain both grounded and mobile. We neither fly away nor fall into an abyss. For the Truth that Embraces All also embraces us. It is our comfort in whatever landscape we find ourselves. And truth is our guide toward what is yet to come. One thing that is coming is the need to extend that comfort to our fellow travelers. As the 13th century Persian poet Hafiz said:

Here soar
Not with wings,

But with your moving hands and feet
And sweating brows -

Standing by your Beloved's side
Reaching out to comfort this world

With your cup of solace
Drawn from your vast reservoir of Truth.[1]

4th Easter 2007, Undercurrent of Joy



4th Easter
John 15: 1-27

I AM the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he trims clean, so that it will be even more fruitful. You have already been purified by the power of the word that I have spoken to you.
Abide in me and I in you.
Just as the branch cannot bear fruit out of itself unless it is given life by the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you stay united with me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains united with me so that I can work in him, bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not remain united with me withers like a branch that is cut off. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words live on in you, pray for that which you also will, and it shall come about for you. By this my Father is revealed, that you bear rich spiritual fruit and become ever more truly my disciples.
As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Ground your being in my love, just as I have taken the aims of my Father into my will and live on in his love.
These words I have spoken to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is the task I put before you: that you love one another as I have loved you.
No man can have greater love than this, than that he offer up his life for his friends. You are my friends if you follow the task I have given you. No longer can I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing. But I call you my friends because I have made known to you all that I have heard from my Father.
You did not choose me, but I have chosen you, and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruits should live on after you, so that what you ask the Father in my name he should give it to you. I say to you out of the fullness of my power: Love one another.
If the world hates you with hatred, remember that they hated me first. If you belonged to people in general, they would love you as belonging to them; but you do not belong to them, because I have chosen you out of mankind. That is why people hate you.
Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master’. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have held on to my word, they will hold on to yours also. Everything that they do to you they will do as though they did it to me, for they do not know Him who sent me.
If I had not come and had not spoken to them, they would be without sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who turns in hatred against me turns in hatred against my Father also. If I had not done deeds among them, deeds which no one else has ever done, they would be without guilt. But now they have seen me, and have still hated both me and my Father.

But it was to fulfill what is written in their law: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
But when the Comforter comes, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bring knowledge of me and will be my witness. And you also will be my witnesses, because you have been united with me from the very beginning. 


4th Sunday after Easter

John 15: 1-27


A grapevine has deep roots. They draw up water and minerals, life and strength, from deep in the earth. As a living being, the vine directs life and strength upward into the branches, the unfolding leaves, the developing fruit, so that each part can fulfill its task.

At Easter, Christ descended into the depths. He rooted Himself forever in the earth, becoming the Vine of Life through which all life now rises and flows. We are the branches of His life.

Poets sometimes sense this joyous undercurrent of life that streams through all things. Wordsworth says:

                        …And I have felt
A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns
And the round ocean and the living air
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man,
A motion and a spirit, that impels
All thinking things, all objects of all thought
And roll through all things.[1]

While with an eye made quiet by the power
Of harmony, and the deep power of joy,
We see into the life of things.[2]


By sending His life into and through us, Christ makes possible for us a depth of joy. He gives us strength to fulfill our life’s tasks. He makes it possible for us to become fruitful in the ways of love.
