Revelation 19, 11-16
And I saw the heavens opening up. And behold, a white horse! And the rider who sat upon it is called faithful and true, who judges justly and battles for justice. His eyes are like flames of fire, and his head wears many crowns, inscribed with a name which no one knows but he himself. The cloak that covers him has been dipped in blood, and he is known by the name “Word of God”.
And the warriors of the sky ride behind him upon white steeds, clad in clean, white linen. And he has a sharp-edged sword coming out of his mouth with which to subdue the nations, and he will shepherd them with a staff of iron. He treads on the winepress holding the wine of the wrath of the will of God, the ruler of all.
And written on his cloak and on his thigh is the name: King of all kings, Lord of all lords.

Rev. 19:11-16
Some plants bloom, set seed and die in one year. For a plant to exist for more than one year, to exist perennially, say a rosebush, a part of it must become wooden. It is the hardness, the thorny wood, that allows the plant to continue to live year after year.
There is a hard edge to today’s gospel reading. It speaks of sharp swords, iron staffs, winepresses. As paradoxical as it may seem, their very hardness is what makes our continued lives possible.
The sharp sword is the discerning word of truth from the mouth of God. We may prefer the soft greenness of our wishes and hopes, of our desires and illusions. But there is no progress, no growth or evolution of our being without the sharpness of truth.
The rod of iron is the starry iron in our own blood. It makes it possible for us to be upright, to rise above the forces which would chain us in slavery to the earth. Our uprightness, a gift from the stars, allows us to continue to grow toward the Sun-God.
The winepress is another instrument of discernment. It is the divine instrument that discerns how much of our blood’s uprightness has been dedicated to God’s will for our development, and how much of our blood’s self-will needs to be discarded as unfit.
A rose blossom is not possible without the support of the thorny wood. Without a hard-edged capacity for truth, without uprightness and discernment in our growth toward God’s will, the continuance and blossoming of our deepest and truest being is not possible. For true life is not about comfort. It is about overcoming—overcoming illusion and self-deception, overcoming being chained to the earthly, overcoming our little ego’s self-satisfaction. The deep life, the truly continuing life, is aligned with truth, with uprightness, with developing the wine of a true love for others.
When we have been cleansed, or have cleansed ourselves, of deception and illusion, we become trustworthy. We finally arrive at the place of our deepest and inmost soul, the place where Christ, the King of kings, he who is faithful and true, lives in us.

Revelation19: 11 – 16
In the picture language of
Revelation we see a rider on a white horse. His name is ‘Word of God’. We are
shown this word as a sharp double edged sword. This sharp sword subdues
nations, that is, it blunts the fury of nationalism. And it protectively guides
the nations of humanity in the direction they need to go, with the upright iron
staff of spiritual strength.
The rider and his hosts precede the harvest the souls
of nations. He treads the winepress, crushing their historical deeds and
extracting the wine of their useful essence.
Such harvesting of souls may feel like wrath being visited upon us. But it
is the necessary accompaniment to the activity of the Word of God, the Giver of
Life, he who bears and creates order in the life of the world.
The father has created us for
a purpose. From time to time the old, the useless, the deadwood must be
removed, so that intended life can move forward. Life cannot just keep piling
up; in order to make room for new life, the old forms must be broken.
The fact is, we are food for
God and the angels. They helped plant us on the earth; they have nourished and
sustained us through all our growth and life changes. They have the hope, the
expectation of a harvest from their unceasing work. A harvest of reverence, a
harvest of love, a harvest of conscientious deeds. It is from the harvest of our deeds that they will give us new life in the future. So in the words of the poet:
Let us now form roots and stem,
Leaf upon leaf, a crown and
blossoms --
For does not wine bloom?
Wine, bees, and vintner, the
ground too,
On which the wheat surges toward
bread:
The Four Kingdoms of Earth
Prepare the Way-Bread for
healing.
Let us now harvest and press,
Let us grind and bake
And consecrate everything that
needs it.
Then Man the Consecrated
approaches the Grave-Table,
And with him the folk and the
circle
Experience creating the Open
Secret
That He gives to them time upon
time.[1]

Revelation 19: 11-16
In a game like chess, there
are rules. Certain moves are allowed and others aren’t. All the moves are
sequential. All the moves will ultimately have their consequences.
God created the greater
universe with a certain structural integrity. Things happen in a certain way,
in a certain order. There are consequences for everything that happens. Thank
goodness!
Last week’s reading gave us
the image of the great feminine archetype, the soul of humanity. She is
impregnated with the sun-radiant Son of God. She struggles to give birth to the
Son of Man, God within and among us. In today’s reading, we hear of how this
Son of Man operates when he is fully grown. He battles to maintain the greater
order, the order of justice and just consequences. He, humanity’s great I AM,
the Creating Word of God, subdues the nations. God’s love for us and ours for
Him is not to be supplanted by a nationalistic and warring love of nation that
destroys other nations. That time in the game has passed. That belonged to the
Gabrielic age, the age of exploration and dominance.
Now we are well into the age
of Michael. It is the age of the family of humankind. If humanity continues to
make unjust wars based on greed and national interests, we will have to experience
the other side of God’s love: we will experience the wrath which is the natural
consequence of our defying the greater order. If humanity continues to ignore
what is truly just, truly in line with the greater game plan that God has put
into place, we will be defeated by our own maneuvers. We will not be allowed to
up-end the chess board. If we break the rules, set ourselves against the
greater reality of the way things are, we can only ultimately lose the game.
