5th Sunday After Easter 2022, The Way I Loved

 5th Sunday after Easter

John 14:1-31

"Let not your hearts be troubled. Trust in the power that leads you to the Fatherly Ground of the World and Me. In my Father's house, there are many rooms. If it were not so, how could I have said to you, 'I go there to prepare a place for you'? And when I have gone and prepared a place for you, I will come again and take you up into the realm of my Being and working, so that where I work, you also may work. And you know the way where I am going."

Then Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?"

Ain Vares
Jesus answered, "I myself am the Way—the Truth— and the Life.
No one finds his way to the Father but through me. If you had known my Being, you would have recognized my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him."

Then Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father; that would satisfy our deepest yearning."

Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Does your heart's voice not tell you that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you are not just my own. But the Father, who lives eternally in Me, continues to do His works in them. Build your faith on the power of my Being that lets you know: I in the Father, the Father in me. Or at least learn to trust through looking at the works themselves that have arisen.

Truly, truly I say to you, whoever trusts in my Being will also do the works I do—and greater deeds will he do because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask for in unity with me, I will do it so that the Father's deeds may be revealed in the working of the Son. When you turn to Me in prayer in the power of my name, I will be the Creating One in all your works. If you truly love me, you will share in my spiritual goals. And I will ask the Father, and He will send to you another Counselor, who will stand by you forever, even the Spirit of Truth. The earthly world cannot receive this Counselor, for it cannot perceive his working and does not recognize him. But you know him, for he will live with you and will work in you.

I will not leave you desolate—I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see Me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also. On that day, you will truly know what it means that I am in the Father, and you in Me and I in you.

Whoever bears my spiritual goals within themselves, and brings them to revelation in their working, is one who truly loves me. And whoever truly loves Me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and will reveal myself to them."

Then Judas (not the Iscariot) said, "But Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the people who are in the world?

Jesus replied,

Roland Tiller

"Whoever truly loves Me reveals my Spirit, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and prepare with them a dwelling in the everlasting [or, an eternal dwelling]. Whoever does not love Me cannot reveal my Spirit. And the spirit power of the word that you hear is not from me; it is the speaking of the Father who sent me.

These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the health-bringing Spirit, the Counselor whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you everything and will bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, nor let them be afraid.

You heard Me say to you, 'I am going away, and yet I am coming to you.' If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I am.

I have told you now before it happens so that when it happens, you may find trust. I no longer have much to say to you, for soon, the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over Me.

But I act in accordance with the Father's purpose, as it was entrusted to Me so that the world may know that I love the Father. Do the same. Arise, let us be on our way.

John 14:1-31

The sun is visible to us as a clearly defined, round object in the sky. At the same time, the real sun is actually bigger than that. Far beyond that visible object in the sky, the sun's life-giving light and warmth radiate out in all directions into the universe. It would be accurate to say that we on earth are, in fact living within the sun. We are attached, enlivened by invisible rays, to the heart of our universe.

Our own hearts are a place where the essence of our being both concentrates itself and pours itself out into the world. We shine on whatever we love. We are attached to others with our heartstrings. Our love makes our heartstrings vibrate, sing out warmth, kindness, strength, and light. In love, our hearts grow large, great-hearted, whole-hearted, and radiant.

Christ, the Spirit Sun, says in effect to us:

'Let not your hearts be troubled; do not quiver and shrink in fear. Does not your heart's voice tell you that I am in my Father's light, His life, and His love and that the Father shines out in me? The world shall see how I love the Father, how I shine forth, pour out His light, His life, His love. If you love me, you will rejoice…you will love one another, as I love you.'

He speaks to our hearts. His creating Words pour trust and strength into our hearts. The music of His heartstrings plays great-heartedness, peace, and courage, the song of his love. We are living within His heart. He is teaching us to play His life-giving music.

Catherine of Sienna, one who loved Christ, says:

God's art is mine. I did not want his divine talent.

It simply grew in my heart from

the way I

loved.*

2nd Passiontide 2022, Skill They Can Learn

 2nd Passiontide

John 6:1-15

After this, Jesus crossed to the far shore

Woloschina
of the Sea of Galilee near Tiberius, and a great crowd of people followed him because they had seen the signs of the Spirit he had performed on those who were ill.

Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Feast was near.

When Jesus raised his eyes to the world of the Spirit and beheld how crowds of people were coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread that all these people may eat?" He asked this to test his understanding and presence of mind, for he himself knew what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, "200 denarii [or, seven months wages] would not buy enough bread for them each to have only a little."

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, "A boy is here with five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are these among so many?"

Jesus said, "Let the people sit down in groups." There was plenty of green grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave to those seated, likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.

Now when they were satisfied, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the fragments, that nothing be lost." So, they gathered them, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, "Truly, this is the prophet who is to come into the world." When Jesus became aware that they intended to come and make him king by force, he withdrew again to the mountain alone by himself.

John 6:26-35

There are different kinds of thorns. One kind is a permanent woody part of the plant itself, such as the spurs on a citrus tree or hawthorne. Another is a removable part of the plant's skin—such as the prickle on a rose. It does not belong to the plant's deepest layers. Nevertheless, these prickles, like the stinger of a bee, can embed themselves and infect.

In the Passiontide prayers from the altar, we ask God not to focus on 'the sting of evil' in our hearts. The deepest core of our hearts, made by God, is good. But our hearts have been stung by the thorn of the adversary and are infected with evil. We are acutely aware of our common illness, which inflames us and causes us to wound others. At times, we may feel our inner selves to be lying on the ground, sick unto death. Our hearts need to be healed of their infections. The goodness of our core needs to be strengthened and nourished.

Christ, the divine Physician, came to nourish and strengthen our heart's core. He gives us the twelvefold bread from the stars, from his Father in the heavens, to nourish, strengthen and heal us.

We stand in awe before the gift He offers us, the bread of Himself. We may be inclined to rush in, almost greedy for healing. We may want the whole loaf. But He says in the words of Rumi:

Nibble at me.

Don't gulp me down.

How often is it you have a guest in your house

who can fix everything?*

To us, Catherine of Sienna adds:

A thorn has entered your foot. That is why you

weep at times at

night.

There are some in this world

who can pull it

out.

The skill that takes they have

learned from

Him. **

We take in the bread and wine to become strong, to be healed, so that the good in the depths of our hearts may endure. At the same time, we take it in not only for ourselves. We take it in so that we, in turn, can help in the healing of others.

1st Trinity I, 2022, Rest in Prayer

1st  Trinity I

Matthew 20:1-16

Codex aureus Epternacensis, 11th century
"The kingdom of the heavens is like a man, the master of his house, who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. Agreeing to pay them one denarius a day, he sent them out
into his vineyard.

"At about nine o'clock, he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace, and he said to them, 'Go also into my vineyard, and I will give you whatever is right.' So they went.

"He went out again at about noon and at three o'clock and did the same. At five o'clock, he went out and found others standing there, and he said to them, 'Why do you stand here all day idle?' They said, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said, 'You, too, go into the vineyard.'

"And when evening came, the master of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.'

"Those who had been hired at five o'clock came forward, and each received one denarius. Therefore, when it was the turn of those hired first, they expected to receive more. However, they, too, also received one denarius each. They took it, but they began to grumble against the master of the house. 'These men who were hired last only worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'

"However, he answered one of them, saying, 'Friend, I am not being unjust to you. Did you not agree with me for one denarius? Take what you have earned and go. I wish to give to the one hired last the same as I give to you. Have I not the right to do as I wish with what is mine? Or do you give me an evil look because I am generous?'

"Thus will the last be first and the first will one day be last."

Matthew 20:1-16

If I want to lift a weight, I have to exert continuous effort to keep it raised. If I let go, it immediately falls. This is how things go in the kingdom of the earthly—objects are subject to the downward pull of the law of gravity. They require continuous effort to keep them raised.

In the kingdom of life, however, another law prevails. Sunlight continuously draws enormous masses of matter skyward in the form of water vapor, trees, and plants. The sky kingdom operates according to the laws of levity. Even our bodies respond to its upward pull.

Today's gospel reading is about working not in the earthly kingdom but in the life kingdom. Different rules apply here. The workers are thinking only in earthly terms—the amount of effort expended determines the rewards received. But we are all working not only on fields of earth but in fields of heaven as well. What is important in the heavenly kingdom is that the work be done by all, to the best of their ability, according to heavenly time, and not for the purposes of personal reward.

The heavenly kingdom, like the sun, sends us its warmth. It draws us upward. For millennia, human beings have been like vines, producing fruits of devotion, love, and prayer. Catherine of Sienna sees the ripening fields of humanity and says:

The sun hears the fields talking about effort

and the sun

Van Gogh
smiles,

and whispers to me:

"Why don't the fields just rest, for

I am willing to do

everything

to help them

grow?"

Rest, my dears, in

prayer.*

Behind today's parable about labor, effort, and reward lies a further theme: in the heavenly kingdom of life, for whom is the harvest intended? The parable says that the Master who owns the field is the kingdom of the heavens itself, with all its divine beings. The angels, and even God, need our willing cooperation in the work of the harvest. They are awaiting the harvest of the soul-spiritual substance we have to offer.

And so, to the realm of uplift, light, and life we offer our purest thoughts, the love of our hearts, and our willing devotion. We offer ourselves to the Master's harvesting of souls so that we become the wine of angels, the strengthening and gladdening of God. Then, likewise, all receive what they need as the day's sustenance.

2nd St. Johnstide 2019, Free

John the Baptist Preaching, Rembrandt

St. Johnstide
John 5: 31-38

If I were only appearing as my own witness, my testimony would be without truth [real power]; but there is another who bears witness to me, and I know that the testimony He gives me is the full truth [possesses full reality].

You sent messengers to John, and he gave valid testimony. But human testimony is not enough for me, for I want you to find salvation [healing] through my word.

He [John] was the burning and bright shining lamp [fire], and you wanted nothing more than to bathe for a while in that light. A weightier testimony is at my disposal than that of John. The deeds which the Father has given me to accomplish, the deeds which I fulfill, they testify for me that the Father has sent me. And so the Father who sent me Himself testifies to me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form; the Word which proceeds from Him does not live in your souls, for you do not open yourselves to him whom He has sent.

John 5: 31-38

There was a small curly-headed dark-haired child who loved fairytales. She lived in a home where the mirrors were all far above her head. Imagine her astonishment when her parent lifted her up to see her reflection and she discovered that she wasn’t golden-haired like the princesses in the fairytales! She was so disappointed. Did not being golden-haired mean that she wasn’t a princess after all?

Mirrors allow us to see ourselves from the outside. They enable a degree of objectivity. Mirrors can show us truth, at least on one level. Thinking and feeling human souls can also serve as mirrors for the truth.

In today’s Gospel, Christ talks about how spiritual truth operates. He affirms that John the Baptist recognized Him, that John’s testimony about the truth of Christ’s being was valid. But He urges us not to be satisfied merely with accepting John’s eyewitness account. He wants us to take into consideration two other levels of testimony.

One is the testimony that comes from His Father, who shines through the deeds of teaching and healing that Christ does. The other, perhaps more relevant for us, comes from within us, from within our own hearts and souls. Christ wants to be mirrored in us, to see Himself, hear His evolving Word in us. Without opening our souls, opening our thoughts and our feelings to Christ, He cannot find His truth or the truth of the Father in us. If we do not open our souls to Him, He says, we cannot mirror his working.

Catherine of Sienna writes of waiting for her father to return from work one night. She says:

I saw him coming. We ran into each other’s arms
and he lifted me as he so often had—
twirled me through the air,
his hands beneath
my arms.
That is what the truth does:
lifts us and lets us
fly.*

Grace and truth come from Christ, who is Truth.  John 1:17, John 14:6.  When we let ourselves mirror the truth, we are free to align ourselves with what He really is. “You shall know the truth”, He says, “and the truth shall set you free.” John 8:32.

4th St. Johnstide 2007, Rest In Prayer

St. Johnstide
John 3: 22-36

After this Jesus and his disciples came to the land of Judea. There he stayed with them and baptized. John also baptized; he was at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there, and people came to him and were baptized. For John had not yet been imprisoned.

Then a dispute arose between the disciples of John and the Jews about the path of purification. And they came to John and said to him, “Master, he who came to you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness – here he is, baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

John answered, “No human being can grasp spiritual power for himself that is not given to him from the higher worlds. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’

“He who has the bride, he is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens to him, he is filled with joy at the bridegroom’s voice. This joy of mine is now full. He must increase, but I must decrease.

He who descends from above, out of the spiritual world, is elevated above all beings of the earth. Whoever is only of the earth, whose being arises from the earthly, his word is also earthbound.

He who comes from the heavens is elevated above all who have arisen from the earthly. What he has seen and heard in the world of the spirit, to that he can bear direct witness, but no one accepts his testimony.

But whoever accepts his testimony, sets his seal to this: that God is true [truth] [that there is no higher truth than the reality of God]. Whoever God has sent, his words are filled with the power of divine thought, for God gives the spirit to human beings not according to human rules, but according to the creative power that he awakens in man.
Nicoletto Semitecolo

The Father holds the Son surrounded in his love, and has given everything into his hands. Whoever trusts in the power of the Son within himself, he grows out of the earthly into timeless life.

Whoever cannot trust in the power of the Son within will not behold the world of life; rather the working might of the spirit world must one day burn him like a fire that will consume him.”

John 3: 22-36

To plant a seed is an exercise in trust – we trust that this tiny hard little thing we stick in the ground has the power to develop into something quite different. We trust that the seed will grow up out of the earth, into the light and air, and will undergo its enormous changes of form. These changes are generated by the life-giving power of the sun.

Something similar takes place within us. Our lives, our souls, undergo tremendous changes and development. The powers that be have planted us here on earth. They have tremendous faith in our ability to develop. They have even given us all the potential. It all depends on our capacity to trust in the power of God’s Son within us.

“Whoever trusts in the power of the Son within himself, he grows out of earthly life into timeless life.” John 3:36

If the seed were too afraid to stretch into the light and air, it would remain in the earth and moulder away. If our souls and lives are ruled by fear and anxiety, we remain chained to the earthly.

“Whoever cannot trust in the power of the Son within will not behold the world of life. John 3:36 The Son God is the power behind our becoming. He is the power that gives us the courage to proceed through all our changes, to keep growing, ever higher, ever deeper. We don’t need to be so anxious, so full of our own efforts. We have help.

Catherine of Sienna wrote:

I am willing to do
Everything

6th Sunday after Easter
May 13, 2007
John 14: 1-31

This week the air here was filled with wildfire smoke; but at the same time with the voices of many birds. Each bird has its distinctive song. It has been said that birdsong, each note shaping the living atmosphere, keeps the air alive.

When we stop to listen, we realize that the world is full of voices. One of the quieter, more subtle voices is the inner voice of the heart. Our heart’s voice is distinctive. It can sing; it can lament; it can comfort and inform. And our heart’s voice is in conversation with other voices.

In conversation with his disciples, Christ, the voice of the Father’s heart, prompts: “Does your heart’s voice not tell you that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?” John 14:10 He reminds them of what their heart’s voice has told them.

His voice is the voice of the great Fire-Bird of the sun, eternally consumed, eternally rising again. Christ, who is eternally emerging from the Father’s heart, sings out the Father’s love for us; he sings of the dove of Truth that He will send from the Father’s heart to guide us; He sings of His continuing presence.

Despite the smoke and consuming fire in our lives, in our heart we can hear the voice of Christ, reminding us of our spiritual home.  He is singing to us of the goals of our lives, assuring us that we are not alone. His voice in our hearts shapes the atmosphere in which we live.

Catherine of Sienna could hear the Voice:

My perfect Lord sang,
“Less likely is God to condemn my hand’s action
than to condemn any
soul.”

How could that be possible,
My heart thought?

And the Christ, knowing all minds, replied,
“Forgiveness is the foundation of God’s
being”.[1]
