4th Trinity 2020, Water of Life

 November Trinity

The end of Revelation 22:12-21

"Keep watch. I am coming soon, and I will have my rewards with me to give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the goal.

"Blessed are those who cleanse their garments so that they will have power in the realm of the Tree of Life, which overcomes death and may go through the gates into the Holy City. Outside shall remain those bound to low senses, those who serve evil powers, who walk impure paths of soul, who spread death around them, who give themselves up to demonic forces, and who, through their ways and deeds, falsify their true being.

"I, Jesus, sent my angel to report these things to your assembled communities. I AM the root and stock of David, the star who unfolds his brightness in the morning."

And the Spirit and the Bride, the Holy City, say, "Come!"

And may whoever hears also say, "Come!" And may the thirsty come, and may everyone who wants it get to drink the Water of Life freely, as grace.

Everyone who hears can find their inmost being strengthened in the prophetic words of this book. Whoever does not yet sense its greatness and truth, God will lead them to full knowledge through the trials of destiny written in this book.

And whoever diminishes the words of this prophecy, God will remove from them their share in the Tree of Life that overcomes death and their share in the Holy City written about in this book.

He who lends these words their power says, "Yes, I am coming quickly!"

Yes, so be it. Amen. Come, Jesus our Lord. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all!

Revelation 22:12-21

There is a great wellspring, a tree-shaped fountain that exists just behind the veil of the senses. Bright waters gather and rise powerfully, release in a great showering crown, and fall in sparkling color back to the Source, to rise again, ever-changing, ever renewed.

artist unknown

Within this shimmering fountain-tree, there appears One who gathers substance and rises in birth, whose arms, outstretched like a cross, shower the blessings of His love's light, who falls into death and then gathers himself and rises anew. He gathers and ascends again in ever greater cycles, joining heaven and earth.

He is the pattern for all life. The flowing rise of energy, the sustained spreading release of the crowning, the falling back to the Source; this pattern underlies the flow of our day, the rising and falling of the phases of our lives, the arc of an entire lifetime, and of lives in succession.

He says, "Blessed are those who cleanse their garments so that they will have power in the realm of the Tree of Life which overcomes death."

We all wear inner garments of soul, garments woven of habits, thoughts, feelings. We have stained them in our everyday lives.

Roland Tiller

But beyond the veil of the senses, we hear the voice. He who shines with the brightness of morning encourages us to dip our soul garments into His fountain so that we can overcome our earthbound tendencies. He encourages us to rise with Him in enthusiasm, to release His love and light into life, to return with Him, who is the Source, the true spirit of the earth.

"Keep watch," He says. "I AM coming soon. You (He says) who have washed your soul garments in the knowledge that the sense-world is not all that there is;

You who have felt My power flowing through the veins of your life;

You who have worked to rise above the death of your soul, your reward shall be to join me in the Fountain of Life, to partake of my renewing life at its Source, for everyone who wants it may drink of Me, the Water of Life, freely, as grace."

Revelation 22: 12-21

When we go through an airport, there are certain items that are not allowed. If we have thoughtlessly brought them, we have to leave them behind before we can proceed on our journey.

Merlaya Allwood
The gospel reading speaks of certain human qualities of soul, soul baggage that we have to leave behind at the gates of the Holy City. These soul qualities are not allowed to enter, for they serve the forces of mortality and death. They cannot enter, because the Holy City, the city of mankind’s future existence, is a realm of life. It is a realm where the Tree of Life grows and blossoms and bears fruit; a realm where the Water of Life flows freely and endlessly; where the Star of the Morning shows illumines all.

This is the last week of the church year. We have come to a kind of portal. We are about to enter a new beginning. What baggage shall we leave behind?

At this threshold we meet the One who calls Himself the Door. We enter through Him. He calls himself both the beginning and the goal. He is the place where endings and beginnings come full circle and meet. He encourages us to wash our garments, to continue to purify our souls through prayer and sacraments and meditation, to purify our life’s bodies through our striving to overcome the death forces in ourselves and to create habits of virtue.

He is the root and the star. He is the source out of which we all grow and blossom and become fruitful; He is the morning star which announces the beginning of a new day. ‘Come’ He calls. ‘Let go of the old; enter into My realm of the ever-flowing, ever-creating newness. For I wish to give you My power to create.’

Revelation 22:12-21

When we receive a wedding invitation, first of all, we rejoice for the bride and groom. They have found love in one another and are joining forces. Then we must decide whether we will attend; and what we shall wear.

Carolsfeld
This part of the Revelation to John is extending a wedding invitation to us. ‘Come!” it says. The invitation comes from the Spirit Bridegroom, whose very being is love; and it comes from the bride, the Holy City, the community of all those who have joined their lives to the Holy Spirit.

Come! they say. Join us in the great and joyous wedding of the God of Love and the Soul of Humanity. Drink the Waters of Life with us. Gather strength for what is always coming towards you from the future. Join us in preparing for what follows the wedding—the gracious birth—the arrival of the Son of Man.

We all receive the invitation, a standing invitation that arrives daily, weekly, yearly. Daily as an invitation to quiet prayer and contemplation; weekly as an invitation to the divine service that dedicates the souls of individuals and the soul of the community itself as an offering to the divine—the Act that consecrates the human being. And every year, at this time, the invitation is renewed as we are reminded of the great goal of humanity’s existence—union with the Divine.

In answering these invitations, we are attiring ourselves for the great wedding, in soul garments clean and radiant. We are preparing ourselves both for the wedding and the New Birth of the One who calls Himself the Alpha and the Omega, the Bright Morning Star, the Initiator and the Goal.

4th June Trinity 2018, Waters of Life

Additional June Trinity
John 7: 33-44

Jesus said, ‘Only a short time shall I still be with you; then I go to Him who sent me. You will seek and not find me. Where I am you cannot come.’
And the Jews said to one another, ‘Where could he go that we would not be able to find him? Perhaps he intends to go to the Jews in the Greek lands and teach the Greeks himself. What does he mean by those words: You will seek and not find me: where I am you cannot come?’
On the last, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood there and called out loudly: ‘Whoever thirsts, let him come to me and drink! Whoever fills himself with my power through faith, from his body shall flow streams of life-bearing water, as scripture says.’
He said this to indicate the spirit which those were to receive who unite with him in faith. But this Spirit was not yet working, for Jesus had not yet revealed his spirit-form.
Some of the people who heard these words said, “He is the Christ. Still others said, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?  Does not scripture say that Christ is to come from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the town of David?” And so there was a division about him among the crowd. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.

John 7: 33-44

Human culture has created many ways to send water to where it is needed. Essentially they all involve some form of capture, in a vessel or a pipe or canal. And somewhere at the other end, there is a place of release for the water to flow out. For the whole point of capturing water is to let it go again so that it can support life.

In this reading, Christ likens Himself to a giver of water. He gathers the Father’s life-giving spirit waters. He makes Himself the conduit for these waters of the spirit. At the end, he will pour out the water of life. He pours His Life first into wine and bread at the Last Supper. In so doing he creates another extension of the channel, a conduit that reaches through time into the present day. Then he pours His blood and water from the cross, re-enlivening the dying earth. And finally, He ascends to the clouds, to inhabit the life sphere of the whole earth, to pour the waters of life, both spiritual and physical, onto the earth. This is what He means when He says: “Then I go to Him who sent me. You will look for me and not find me. Where I am going you cannot follow.” John 7:34  We cannot yet follow Him in all His ways, into the biosphere, for we have not yet ascended. So He pours out his life as He rains down on us from the clouds.

Yet this process involves not only Him; we are also included, for He says: “Whoever fills himself with my power through faith, from his body shall flow streams of life-bearing water.” John 7: 38 For Christ’s life-giving spiritual-physical power flows not only in rain, in the wine, in His blood; His waters of life flow now through the blood that flows through every human heart. The poet says:

There are different wells within your heart
Some fill with each good rain.
Others are too deep for that.
In one well
You have just a few precious cups of water.
That “love” is literally something of yourself.*

Christ’s waters of life now flow through the blood that flows through the heart of everyone who drinks from the well of His being. We become the conduits of His streaming life. From human hearts can flow the streams of His life-bearing waters. We receive His waters of life in order to let them go again, to pour out the water of life, of love, wherever it is needed.

Ascension 2016, Water of Life

Ascension by Wm. Blake
Ascension
John 16: 24-33

[Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name.] Pray from the heart, and it will be given to your heart, that your joy may be fulfilled.

All this I have given to your souls in imagery. But the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in pictures, but will tell you openly and unveiled about my Father, so that you can grasp it in full, knowing consciousness. Thus, will I proclaim to you the being of the Father. On that day, you will ask out of my power and in my name. And no longer will I ask the Father on your behalf. For the Father himself will love you because you have loved me, and have known in your hearts that I have come forth from the Father. I have come forth from the Father, and I have come into this world.

I leave the sense world again and return to the world of the Father, of which you say that it is the world of death.”

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking in clear thought and without imagery. Now we know that all things are revealed to you and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

Jesus answered, “Do you now feel my power in your heart? Behold, the time is coming and has already come, when you will be scattered, each to his own loneliness. You will then also leave me alone. But I am not alone, for the Father is eternally united with me.
All this I have spoken to you so that in me you may find peace. In this world, you will have great fear and hardship. But take courage. I have overcome the world.”

John 16: 24-33

Water has the wonderful capacity to change forms easily. As solid ice, it floats. As a liquid, it flows downward to the lowest point it can find. As water vapor, it is invisible, a small amount occupying a vast space. Under the right conditions, the invisible vapor condenses into visible clouds and returns to earth as liquid rain.

Christ is the Water of Life. He took on a solid body in Jesus. At his death, he descended into the earth. At the Resurrection, he gave birth to his life form, sometimes visible, mostly not. At Ascension he became like water vapor – he expanded his nature and being into the entire biosphere of the earth. Like water vapor, he is invisible. But he is the Life that surrounds and penetrates both the earth and us. We breathe him in with every breath we take. Under the right circumstances, he condenses and becomes visible again.

Last Supper, Rosenkranz
One of those times is during the Act of Consecration, the communion service. At his Last Supper, he chose bread and wine to be forever the visible forms of his life. He chose bread to be his body, the form in which he appears. He chose the juice of the vine to be visibly his rejuvenating life, his life blood. And he offers them to us in communion so that we have the opportunity to take in his formative forces, his Life, in a conscious way. In this way, he walks the earth, in us. We may hear him in the words of the poet:

In a mist of light
falling with the rain
I walk this ground
of which [dead] men
and women I have loved
are part, as they
are part of me.  In earth,
in blood, in mind,
the dead and living
into each other pass,
as the living pass
in and out of loves
as stepping to a song.
The way I go is
marriage to this place,
grace beyond chance,
love's braided dance
covering the world.[1]
