Epiphany 2020, Birth or Death?


1st Epiphany
Matthew 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea—during the time of King Herod—behold: wise priest-kings from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
           
“Where is the one born here King of the Jews? We have seen his star rise in the east and have come to worship him.”
           
When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. And he assembled all the high priests and scribes of the people and inquired of them in what place the Christ was to be born.

And they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it was written by the prophet:

And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
Are by no means the least among the rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come forth the ruler
Who will be shepherd over my people, the true Israel.”

Then Herod, secretly calling the Magi together again, inquired from them the exact time when the star had appeared. He directed them to Bethlehem and said, “Go there and search carefully for the child, and when you find him, report to me, that I too may go and bow down before him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and behold, the star that they had seen rising went before them, and led them in its course over the cities until it stood over the place where the child was.

Seeing the star, they were filled with [there awakened in them] an exceedingly great and holy joy.

Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary, his mother; they fell down before him and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him their gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh.

And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their country by another way.

Matthew 2:1–12

The wise priest-kings from the east, as they come closer to the child, stop in the royal city of Jerusalem, asking to see the newborn king. Why were they not led directly to the child? Why were they allowed to alert the Child’s enemies of His presence?

It would seem that this child is, from the beginning, connected with death. A poem by T.S. Eliot hints at this; in it, one of the wise men says,

…were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different…*

The arrival of the Life that is the Light calls forth the shadowy oppositional

forces of death. Herod is threatened by the real heir to the throne that he occupies. He is even willing to kill innocent children to keep possession of it. Yet the destructive power of evil also activates the angels. They will come to Joseph in a dream. They will urge him to take the Child to the city of the sun in Egypt until it is safe to return. They will also offer the Magi the advice to alter their route, leaving Herod uninformed while the child slips away.

Evil finds its match. And the death force that rises up at the Child’s birth will finally be overcome, even in its ‘proper place’ at the end of His life. For in Him, death itself will become the birth of something new, a new human form.

Luke 15:11-32

And he said further: “A certain man had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, ‘Give me the share of the estate which falls to me.’  And he divided his wealth between them. And not many days later the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey to a far country and squandered his estate in the enjoyment of loose living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine came over the land, and he began to be in need. So he went and attached himself to a citizen of the country who sent him out into his fields and let him herd swine. And he longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, but no one gave him anything.

Then he came to himself, and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here of hunger. I will rise up and go to my father and say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against the higher world and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me one of your hired men [workers].’

So he rose up and traveled along the road to his father. When he was still a long way off, his father saw him, felt his misery, ran toward him, embraced him and kissed him. And yet the son said, ‘Father, I have sinned against the higher world and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me one of your hired men [workers].’

But the father called his servant to him. ‘Quickly! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet, and slaughter the fattened calf. Then we shall eat and be merry. For this my son was dead and is risen to life. He was lost and is found again.’ And they began to celebrate.

Meanwhile the older son was in the field. When he returned home and came near the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants to him and asked him what it meant. He gave him the news: ‘Your brother has come home again. So in joy your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back again safe and sound.’

The son grew dark with anger and didn’t want to go in. But his father came out and pleaded with him. He however reproached his father saying, ‘Look! For so many years I have been with you and have never neglected one of your commands. But you never gave me so much as a goat that I might be merry with my friends. And now comes this son of yours who has eaten up your wealth in scandal, and you offer him the fattened calf.’

The father however said to him ‘Child, you are always with me and all that I have belongs to you too. But now we should be glad and rejoice, for this your brother was dead and lives; he was lost and has been found again.’

Luke 15:11-32

We are complex beings. Our souls are populated by many different aspects of our personality. One way to read today’s beautiful parable is to regard each character in the story as one aspect of a single human being.

We all have an inner, fun-loving son who is eager for what the world has to offer. In pursuing the

world one-sidedly, he finds himself cut off from the Source, alone and starving.

We all have a loving Father within, who encourages our explorations and welcomes our return with compassion and joy. And we all have a law-abiding, jealous brother, who is keeping accounts, prone to anger. He feels himself short-changed but is missing the point.

This triad, Father, son and brother, is an image of the human will. We see the Father’s good will, the brother’s ill will, the son’s self-will.

And the most important moment in the story comes when the lost son ‘comes to himself’. In that moment, he recognizes that what keeps us alive is not merely food, but relationship. In coming to himself, he has found his own singularity, and at the same time he recognizes that he needs to re-establish a healthy relationship with his origins in the Source. In coming to himself, he comes to direct his own will.

Life brings us moments of coming to ourselves. Often it is illness or tragedy that brings us this opportunity. But we can also deliberately create moments of silent listening for our own, true voice, the voice that urges us to return to the Source. In such moments we receive the Father’s kiss. We receive the mantle of peace, the ring of unity, sandals of free power. We partake in the celebratory feast which keeps us truly alive. T. S. Eliot said,

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, remembered gate
A condition of complete simplicity
(Costing not less than everything)
And all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well…*

Epiphany 2011, Birth or Death?

1st Epiphany
Matthew 2: 1-12



When Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea—during the time of King Herod—behold: wise priest-kings from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
           
“Where is the one born here King of the Jews? We have seen his star rise in the east and have come to worship him.”

Holy Nights 2010, Be Still

James 1:2-18

Whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, because you know that the inner strength of patience grows in you through the testing of your faith. But this patient perseverance must lead to fulfillment so that you may become mature and whole human beings, not held back in any respect. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask it of God, who gives generously to all without reservation and without reproaches, and what he asks for will be given to him. Only he must ask out of a believing heart, not with a doubting soul.  A doubter is like a wave of the sea, moved and thrown hither and thither by the wind. Such a man should not think that he is able to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is divided and unstable in all his ways.

A brother or sister who considers himself among the lowly may pride himself on his greatness; whoever is rich may be proud of his lowliness. since he will perish like a flower in the grass. When the sun rises with scorching heat, it makes green grass wither and the flower drops off. The beauty in which it appeared to us perishes. So also human wealth will fade away along Man’s paths.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial and withstands the temptation, because, having stood the test, that person will receive the wreath of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

When tempted, no one should say, “I am being led into temptation by God.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he lead anyone into temptation; Every temptation that a human being experiences arises out of his own cravings and desires, which lure and entice him. When human desire once has conceived, then it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Do not be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every truly good and perfect gift descends to us out of the higher world from the Father of the heavenly lights, in whom there is no alternation and no phases of light and darkness. Out of his cosmic will, he called us to life through the truth-bearing Word. We were to be the first fruits among his creatures.

James 1: 2-18

When a wheel is in motion, any given point on the rim is for a while above, and for a while below, bearing the full weight. And then it is above again. Progress, motion forward creates this dynamic.

The world of time is created in the progress of the great wheel of the circling seasons. Our own lives are an example of the motion of the greater wheel of life. For a while we are lifted up. Then we descend to bearing a heavy load. This is a prelude to our rising again.

James in his letter reminds us that our progress in life, with its ups and downs, depends on our patient endurance and our perseverance. This perseverance is a result our wholehearted, undoubting trust in God’s beneficent purpose. Eventually our load-bearing progress will lead us to our goal. We will be mature and whole human beings. We will take our place dancing in the heavens with the Father of Lights.

The poet T.S. Elliot expressed this thought:
Angel of Hope, Iris Sullivan

I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
…..
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing[1].
